Components of Metal Buildings

Purchasers use metal buildings for many purposes, such as sheds, industrial buildings, aircraft hangers, storage facilities, RV storage and garages. Some other uses include riding stables, agricultural and church buildings. Many manufacturers offer prefabricated stock structures. Purchasers can also have buildings customized to certain specifications. Some do-it-yourself buyers can erect the building, but many require professional installation. Buyers prefer metal building because of their durability and energy efficiency. Generally, the basic components of a metal building consist of base modules, framing systems, doors and panels.
  1. Base Parts

    • Base angles come in dimensions of 1-by-2 inches to 4-by-3 inches. Some companies provide the larger dimension as a standard for all their buildings. The base angle fastens to the concrete foundation and serves as the plate for attaching the wall panels. Many metal buildings come with a metal base trim, which enables ease of installation for wall panels. The based trim seals the perimeter where the building meets the foundation and usually matches the wall panels. Some manufacturers many provide a foam closure strip for this purpose, which do not keep rodents from chewing through and entering the building. For buildings without a concrete foundation, a base girt allows the connection of wall panels near the bottom of the structure.

    Framing System

    • The framing components depend on the type of building and the manufacturer. Manufacturers mark the parts for easy identification. All the framing unusually requires field bolt assembly. Parts include beams, rafters and columns to construct the primary framing for the roof and wall systems. Many buildings system also include end wall columns. The girt and purlins members provide the skeleton for attaching the roof and wall panels. The system offers the ability to attach fascia systems, parapet walls and to obtain other architectural designs. Some property owners attached these frames to existing structures.

    Doors

    • Many property owners used roll up doors for light or heavy-duty commercial and industrial use. The doors come in numerous sizes and colors. The reliability and ease of installation makes this style a common choice. Depending on the location, buyers can have the door customized to meet higher wind loads and include insulation. These doors operate manually or an optional motor with remote control. Other choices include sectional overhead doors, sliding doors and bifold. For aircraft hangars or building that requires wider openings, install the hydraulically operated hydro-swing doors.

    Panels

    • Panels provide covering for the roof system and walls. This component comes in a range of colors and gauges. The gauge refers to the thickness of the metal. Some manufacturers use a portion or 100-percent recyclable material. Building owners can buy component that have a high-energy efficiency to save money on energy costs. The panels have the corrosion resistant finishes and must meet certain specifications, such as hail impact, lift testing and snow loads. Owners can choose from various panel designs. Building owners who prefer a less conspicuous look select low ribbed panels, which do not have the deep recesses between the raised ribs. Choices of panels include sheets that present a more visually aesthetic style.
