How to Build a Taiko Stand

Taiko stands are meant to hold taiko drums. Taiko drums can be played with hands as well as with mallets. They are a Japanese drum that are commonly used in festivals and competitions. Taiko drum stands are often simple in design and easy to build. They are also able to fold for convenient storage. Taiko stands hold the drum by its side and by its base. The drum is positioned at a 45-degree angle in the stand making it easy to execute various drumming techniques.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a 34-inch board flat. Drill a hole through the center of the board. The center of the board is 17 inches away from each end and 1 ¾ inches away from each edge. Repeat this process on each 34-inch board.

    • 2

Bolt the boards together so that you have two pairs of boards. Set them on edge. Position them vertically and parallel so the pairs are 11 inches apart. Lay a 17-inch board perpendicularly on top of the boards so its ends are flush with the sides of the two outside 34-inch boards. The 17-inch board should be 6 inches away from the top ends of the pair of boards. Screw this board to the two outside 34-inch boards. Use four screws for this task.

    • 3

Lay a 14-inch board perpendicularly across the pair of boards. Its ends should be flush with the sides of the two inside 34-inch boards. It should be parallel with the 17-inch board and 22 inches away. Screw this board to the two inside 34-inch boards. Use four screws for this task.

    • 4

Turn the two pairs of boards over so they rest on the 17-inch and 14-inch boards. Screw the last 17-inch board to the two outside 34-inch boards so it is directly above and aligned with the 14-inch board that is beneath. Screw the last 14-inch board to the two inside 34-inch boards so it is directly above and aligned with the 17-inch board that is beneath.

Position the taiko stand on its side and spread the stand open so it is at a 90-degree angle. Screw an eye hook into the 7-inch center of the 14-inch board that is 6 inches away from the ends of the 34-inch boards. Screw the second eye hook into the 8 ½-inch center of the 17-inch board that is 6 inches away from the ends of the 34-inch board. The eye hooks should be facing each other. Tie your ropes to the eye hooks so the stand cannot open more than 90 degrees.

Position your stand upright so it is resting on the ends of the 34-inch boards. The rope should be close to the ground. Set your drum in the stand so the bottom of the drum rests against the two 34-inch boards that are closest together.
