How to Make a Pipe Rack

Pipe racks are used to store and display tobacco pipes. They are often found in smoke lounges, cigar areas and gentlemen's rooms. Pipe racks are often simple in design, however their construction can require a fair amount of measuring and cutting. Building your own pipe rack will be less expensive than buying one from the store. When building your own pipe rack it is a good idea to use a decorative hardwood like oak. Oak will not only be durable but it will match the beauty of the wood on your pipes.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down a 16-inch board flat and horizontal. Draw a line across the center of the board so it is 1.5 inches away from each 16-inch edge. Draw five lines perpendicularly across the first line so they are spaced 3 inches apart, with the two outside lines 2 inches away from the ends of the board. Draw a 1/8-inch circle where each of the lines intersect. Repeat this process on the other 16-inch board.

    • 2

Draw a 1.5-inch dotted line on each side of the five lines drawn in the last step. They should be a quarter inch away from the lines, starting at the 1.5-inch center of the board and ending on the 16-inch edge. All the lines must end along the same 16-inch edge. You will have 10 dotted lines. Repeat this process on the other 16-inch board.

    • 3

Drill a 1-inch hole through the intersections that have the circles drawn around them. Your pipe necks will fit through these holes.

    • 4

Cut along the dotted lines with your band saw until you reach the holes that were drilled. These slots will make it easy to place your pipes on the rack.

    • 5

Position the two 6-inch boards on their 3-inch edges, so they are parallel and 16 inches apart. Place the two 16-inch boards perpendicularly between them so the edges with the slots are facing up and are 5.25 inches apart. Drill four 3/32-inch pilot holes through each 6-inch board, so two of them enter each end of the 16-inch boards. Each pair of pilot holes should be spaced 2 inches apart, and should enter the ends of the 16-inch boards at their 1/8-inch center. Screw the boards together so the corners are flush. Use eight 1.5-inch screws.

    • 6

Sand your pipe rack down with your medium-grade and fine-grade sandpaper. Wipe it down with a tack cloth and apply your wood stain. Let the rack dry.

    • 7

Locate studs in the wall where you would prefer to hang your pipe rack. Position your pipe rack against the wall with your level to ensure the 16-inch boards are horizontal. Screw through the plywood and into the studs. Use two 3-inch screws.
