How to Build a Fly Pole Stand

Fly pole stands are used to hold fly-fishing poles, fly-fishing tubes and other fishing poles. They are a handy feature to have in a boathouse, as they can help organize your fishing gear. Fly pole stands are usually simple in design and do not require much time or skill to build. Stands like these are often made out of weather-resistant wood as well, so they can be kept outside during the rain. Teak is a wood that doesn't have to be finished in order to hold up to the weather and is often used for fly pole stands.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a 30-inch board flat and horizontal. Draw two lines across the boards so they are parallel with the 30-inch edge, spaced 2 ½ inches apart, with each line 1 ½ inches away from the 30-inch edges. Draw five lines perpendicularly across the first pair so they are spaced 5 inches apart, with the two outside lines 2 ½ inches away from the ends of the board. Repeat this process on the other 30-inch board.

    • 2

Drill a 2-inch hole where each of the lines intersect on one of the 30-inch boards. Drill a 1/2-inch-deep hole where each of the lines intersect on the other board. The board with the half holes is the baseboard to your fly pole stand.

    • 3

Position the two 28-inch boards on edge parallel and 30 inches apart. Place the two 30-inch boards perpendicularly between them on edge so they are spaced 26 inches apart. The half holes should be facing the holes on the other board. Drill 3/32-inch pilot holes through the 28-inch boards and into the 30-inch boards. You should have two holes entering each end of each 30-inch board. Space the holes 3 inches apart and make sure they enter the ends of the 30-inch boards at their 1/2-inch center.

    • 4

Drill a 1/4-inch-deep, 3/8-inch hole into each of the pilot holes. These holes will hide your screw heads. Screw the boards together and fill the holes surrounding the screw heads with the wood putty. Let the putty dry.

    • 5

Sand down the stand with your medium-grade and fine-grade sandpaper. Wipe the fly pole stand clean with your tack cloth.
