How to Make a Twin-Size Bunk Bed

Twin-size bunk beds are often used for siblings, in dorm rooms or in camps. They offer two sleeping areas while only taking up the floor space of one bed. Twin-size bunk beds can be made out of standard construction lumber. This type of wood is not decorative; however, it is strong enough to get the job done resulting in a sturdy, long-lasting bunk bed. With a few pieces of pine lumber and a couple pieces of plywood, this type of bed can be built in a couple of hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Set two 42-inch boards on edge, parallel and 75 inches apart. Set the two 75-inch boards perpendicularly between them so they are also on edge and spaced 39 inches apart. Screw through the 42-inch boards and into the ends of the 75-inch boards. Use eight screws for this task. This frame will hold your box spring. Repeat this step so you have two frames.

    • 2

Lay one frame flat and set one sheet of plywood on top of it so all of the edges are flush. Screw the plywood to the frame. Use eight screws for each 78-inch side. Repeat this step with the other frame and sheet of plywood.

    • 3

Position a 2-by-6-by-73-inch board on edge and hold 2-by-8-by-73-inch board on top of it so its 2-inch edge is flush with the side of the 2-by-6 board. The ends of these boards should be flush. Screw the boards together using four screws spaced 12 inches apart. This is a corner post to your bunk bed. Repeat this step three more times so you have four corners.

    • 4

Lay one frame flat on top of the plywood. Position the corners upright so they're standing on end around each corner of the frame. You might need an extra pair of hands to do this. The corners of the frame should be positioned inside the corners of the corner posts. Lift the frame up 8 inches and screw through the corner posts and into the frame. Use four screws for each corner.

    • 5

Lift the second frame in between the posts so it is parallel with the lower frame and 46 inches above it. The plywood should be underneath the frame. Screw through the corner posts and into the frame. Use four screws for each corner. Set your box springs and mattresses on the frames so they rest on the plywood and are in between the boards on the frame.
