How to Make BBQs

Despite what some may think, a barbecue can be made out of a handful of readily available materials, making it more affordable than going out and spending a couple hundred dollars on a brand new barbecue. Using a barbecue is quite different than grilling food in the "usual" manner because it cooks food at low, controlled temperatures. Even though this can take anywhere from two to four hours to cook the food, you will find that your food will be moist and tender, and infused with flavor. This is something that a typical grill cannot accomplish. All in all, building your own barbecue is something that almost anyone can complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the wood chips in water for approximately 30 minutes to an hour. The soaked wood chips will promote smoke inside the barbecue as you cook.

    • 2

Drill three 1/4-inch holes in the trash can lid. Drill a fourth hole that is approximately 1/2-inch in diameter.

    • 3

Drill a 1/2-inch hole near the base of the trash can.

    • 4

Place the electric hot plate in the bottom of the trash can and pull the electrical cord through the 1/2-inch hole you drilled near the base.

    • 5

Place the soaked wood chips in the wood chip box, and then place the box on top of the electric hot plate. A wood chip box can be found at any home store in the seasonal grilling section.

    • 6

Place the circular grill rack into the trash can. The rack should be at least 1/2-inch smaller than the top of the trash can since the circumference of a trash can gets smaller near the base. This will ensure that the grill rack rests near the top of the trash can securely.

    • 7

Plug the electric hot plate into an outdoor electrical socket and cover the trash can with its lid.

    • 8

Watch the temperature gauge and once it reaches a temperature of 180 to 230 degrees Fahrenheit you can begin cooking.

    • 9

Place the food you plan on barbecuing on top of the grill rack and cover the barbecue with the trash can lid.

    • 10

Cook the food for two to four hours until cooked through and tender.
