DIY: AV Rack

AV (audio/video) racks are used to store home theater equipment. They have at least two shelves to hold DVD players, sound receivers and other devices. They will often be used to store all of this gear plus a television on top of the rack. Simple rack plans will use easy to find materials, like standard construction lumber, and hardware allowing for an easy setup by an experienced carpenter.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay three 19 1/2-inch boards flat and spaced 8 7/8 inches apart. Lay the 23-inch sheet of plywood on top of the boards so its 19 1/2-inch edge is flush with one of the boards, and its opposite edge is 3/4 of an inch away from the other 19 1/2-inch board. The ends of the 19 1/2-inch boards should be flush with the 23-inch edges of the plywood. Screw through the plywood and into the boards. Use three screws for each board. Repeat this step using the last three boards and 23-inch sheet of plywood. These are the sides to your AV rack

    • 2

Position the sides on their 19 1/2-inch edges so the 19 1/2-inch board on each sheet is against the floor. Space the sides 39 inches apart and with the boards between the sheets. The boards should be aligned. Screw a 39-inch sheet of plywood to each pair of boards so you have two shelves and a top to your AV rack. Use six screws for each 39-inch sheet.

    • 3

Hold the 40 1/2-inch sheet against your rack frame so it covers the ends of the boards. This will be the back of the unit. Position the plywood so its edges are flush with the sides of the rack. Screw through the plywood and into the ends of the boards. Use six screws.

Drill two 1 1/2-inch holes through the 20 1/4-inch center of the 40 1/2-inch plywood sheet. Space the holes 12 inches apart so the center of each hole is 5 ½ inches away from the 40 1/2-inch edges. These holes are for wires.
