How to Cut Off Posts Above a Beam

Outdoor construction projects such as pole barns use beams that are anchored into holes in the ground surrounded by concrete. The holes are random depth, usually within 6 inches of being equal in depth. When the vertical posts are set, they are all the same length. When a beam is leveled at cieling height, the tops of the posts will extend randomly above the beam. Cut them off with an ordinary hand saw.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand a ladder up against the post. Climb up the ladder with a hand saw.

    • 2

Stop climbing when your shoulders are even with the top of the beam.

    • 3

Lay the saw flat on top of the beam, perpendicular to the post.

    • 4

Saw into the post as far as you can comfortably. Use the beam as a guide to keep the saw flat and horizontal.

    • 5

Climb down off the ladder. Turn the ladder to face the other direction. Climb back up the ladder and cut through the post from the other side to meet the previous cut line.
