Can Bedrooms Have Stairs?

Yes, bedrooms can definitely have stairs. Stairs help to make the transition from one level to another in a house, whether that level is a whole story or just a couple feet's difference between two levels. The variety of spaces in a house that are used for sleeping areas may make permanent stairs a necessity where a ladder or portable stairs become a nuisance.
  1. Bedroom Loft

    • A bedroom loft may have a permanent staircase rather than a ladder. That staircase may actually be part of the loft and part of the room below, having several landings that store a closet, dresser or some other piece of functional furniture necessary to the bedroom loft's occupant. The stairs are usually not enclosed within a bedroom loft to give the space above and below an air of openess.

    All-in-One Loft

    • Some kids' lofts are all-in-one loft units placed within a kid's bedroom. The unit can include a bed platform up on top with bookshelves and stairs on the sides as well as a study desk and computer work area below. The stairs are usually built right into the loft unit to make reaching the sleeping area on top safe and easy. The stairs may be a full-fledged staircase with risers and treads or just ascending steps mounted on the frame.

    Bi-Level

    • You may find in some bi-level homes, such as ranch homes, that the downstairs bedrooms may have a few stairs leading from the first floor level down into the bedroom. These stairs may actually be behind the bedroom door, leading into the bedroom for more privacy, which is particularly the case when the basement of a ranch style home has been finished for use as one large bedroom.

    Bed Stairs

    • Bed stairs, or bed steps, have been around for a long time. Antique beds were often raised higher than modern beds, leaving the sleeper no other option than to use a set of bed steps to climb in and out of bed. The bed steps are portable and are pushed up against the side of the bed from which the sleeper will get into and out of bed. The steps can be set aside when not in use.
