How to Build My Own Outdoor Stage

Outdoor stages are a popular way of staging concerts, theater and dance performances. Outdoor stages should be large enough to comfortably fit the production you wish to stage, small enough to disassemble as the seasons change, and able to be transported to a new location as needed. Outdoor stages are advantageous because they forgo building capacity regulations and allow patrons to enjoy pleasant weather while watching a performance. Build your own outdoor stage for your specific purpose at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan your outdoor stage. This involves determining the overall size of your staging needs and depends on the type of production you want to host. Typically, theater stages need to be somewhat large to accommodate actor movement, while musical stages are somewhat smaller.

    • 2

Draft a sketch of your stage. Create a scale drawing of your stage that includes specifications for the length, width and height of each part of the stage. Use this to keep track of your progress while building the stage.

    • 3

Purchase materials. Purchase some excess wood and nails beyond what you need to allow for any mistakes.

    • 4

Construct the base of your stage. This is the frame of the stage that sits on the ground and supports the floor where musicians and actors walk. It also elevates the performance above the ground for the audience to view.

    • 5

Build the floor of your stage. The floor is where all of the action of your stage occurs. It sits on top of the stage base. Make it large enough to allow ample performance room but small enough to accomodate just a few people.

    • 6

Assemble the parts of your stage. Ask for help when lifting the stage floor onto the base. With a person on each end, hoist the stage floor onto the base and secure it with nails.
