How to Find Grade Slope in Civil Drafting

Civil drafting is used in engineering draw plans for civil projects such as dams or public buildings. These plans are known as blueprints and provide detailed information for the construction of a project. This allows for calculations to be performed with the drafting plans to ensure proper construction or to alter construction in the event a change is required. The information contained in these drafts allows for the slope of objects to be determined.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the object for which the grade needs to be determined in the drafting plans.

    • 2

Examine the measurement information located around the object. This includes lengths and spans over which an object is placed.

    • 3

Divide the vertical displacement of the object by its horizontal displacement. The resulting figure is the slope or grade of the object. For example, a roof may rise 8 feet over a span of 10 feet. Dividing these numbers yields a fraction of 8 feet / 10 feet. This fraction is reduced to 4 / 5. This final value is the slope of the roof and shows that for every 5 feet the roof runs, it rises 4 feet.
