How to Build a Wooden Drum Cradle

A drum cradle assists when moving drums stored in an upright position by tilting the drum nearly horizontal, allowing it to be wheeled to another location. Build a simple drum cradle for your home or warehouse projects using construction lumber, plywood and hardware that can be found at most hardware stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 8 inches away from two edges on the 38-inch plywood that are at right angles to each other. Draw a 16-inch diameter circle with a compass using this measurement from the edges for the center. The tangents of the circle touch the two edges of the plywood. Cut along 1/4 of the circle so the corner of the plywood is rounded. Repeat this step on the other sheet of plywood. These curved corners will allow leverage when cradling drums.

    • 2

Position the two sheets of plywood on their edges with the curved corners facing down and aligned with each other. Space the plywood 28 inches apart. Set three 28-inch boards on edge and between the sheets at right angles. Space the boards 12 ¾ inches apart. Screw through the plywood and into the boards so 3 screws enters each end of each board.

    • 3

Hold the last 28-inch board between the plywood sheets so it is parallel with the first three boards and flush with the 24-inch edges that have the curve cut in them. The top edge of the board is flush with the 38-inch edges above the curves. Screw the board in this position using 6 screws. This board will help lift the barrel into the cradle.

    • 4

Screw the swivel wheels to the two outside 28-inch boards that were secured in the second step. Space the wheels 26 inches apart on both boards. Use the screws provided.

    • 5

Position your cradle next to a drum that is standing upright so the 38-inch edges are parallel with the drum. Lean your drum away from the cradle and slide the 28-inch board underneath the drum so the other three 28-inch boards are against the drum. Tie your strap around the drum and the cradle to secure them together. Pivot the cradle on its curved corners until the cradle is resting on its wheels.
