DIY Shipping Container Homes

Environmentally conscious persons looking to build homes have many alternative building methods and materials at their disposal. Many homeowners find homes built from shipping containers to be economical and environmentally sound. Once found only in Europe, you can now find shipping container homes in the United States as well. If you intend to build one, consider using a qualified engineer to draw up blueprints for the interior of the home.

Instructions

  1. Location

    • 1

Contact local zoning agencies for information about building restrictions, allowed materials, lot sizes and setback requirements. Locate a flat lot with an existing entry to where you want the home. Shipping container houses go on lots similar to mobile homes, so homeowners can move the structure onto a pad or basement.

    • 2

Research available utility options on-site. Innovative options include solar power, water catchment and other alternative utility methods should conventional installations be unavailable. Determine what permits, licensing and zoning you need for either method before any installation.

    • 3

Have an engineer draw up blueprints detailing the interior design. Municipalities often require a copy of blueprints and schematics showing all construction. Look for an engineer who knows about container homes to perform this step.

    The Shell

    • 4

Place the shipping container on-site. Install a concrete pad or subsurface structure before placement if local ordinances require it.

    • 5

Inspect the exterior and interior of the container for damage. Fractures, loose welds and seams, dents or joint separation require repair before continuing.

    • 6

Locate a competent contractor who has built this type of home. Use this person to cut out window and door locations as well as ventilation. The contractor can also aid in professional installation of porches and solar frames.

    • 7

Cut out the window and door locations in the shell. Install the door, windows and vents. Place the wiring and plumbing entrance points into the shell.

    The Interior

    • 8

Install the wiring according to blueprints and code requirements. Have the local zoning officer inspect the wiring before installing any walls or coverings should you need to adjust anything.

    • 9

Install the plumbing, heating and cooling pipes and outlets. Have the local zoning officer inspect the plumbing and adjust installations as required.

    • 10

Construct the interior in segments. Build rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms in modules. Build cabinetry in modules. Install the modules in each segment of the home.

    • 11

Construct the interior walls and ceiling around the modules and over wiring and plumbing. Use plywood to create walls and ceilings. Place furring strips along the plywood seams to hold them in place. Use metal screws to attach the furring strips to the plywood and the plywood to the metal shell.
