How to Install a Cover Over an Expansion Joint

Expansion joints, such as those at the peak of a roof, require a cover that will allow the expansion joint to breathe while preventing water penetration. Joint covering is made from a rubber material that is attached to the roof with nails. Typically, multiple sections of joint cover will be required: the number will depend on the length of the joint.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Felt-tip marker
  • Chalk line
  • Expansion joint covers
  • Nail gun
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Flashing felt
  • Mastic glue

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the roof line with the tape measure. Divide this length by the length of a section of the expansion joint cover. This will give you the number of pieces needed for the installation.

    • 2

Measure 1-1/4-inch from the edge of the expansion joint with the tape measure. Mark the spot with the felt-tip marker. Run a chalk line over the mark and along the length of the ridge line. Pull it taut and snap a line.

    • 3

Place the cover over the expansion joint and fold over one of the flexible flanges to expose the nailer.

    • 4

Align the edge of the nailer with the chalk line. Drive nails into the nailer every four inches by using a nail gun, or a hammer and nails.

    • 5

Fold over the flexible flange and align it with the chalk line. This will create a bulge in the center of the cover. Drive nails into the nailer every four inches.

    • 6

Cover the flexible flanges with a flashing felt using a mastic glue. The mastic glue will prevent water penetration beneath the flashing felt.
