How to Make a Lathe Tool Cabinet

A lathe tool cabinet provides easy access to your lathe tools. It will free up work space and drawer space. Lathe tool cabinets like these have 18 slots for the handles of 18 different wood carvers. A dedicated cabinet is a very simple accessory to your workshop, and only a small amount of supplies, measuring and work time is required. Once the lathe tool cabinet is finished it will stand nicely on any workbench, against a wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Set two 28-inch boards on edge, parallel and 24 inches apart. Position two 24-inch boards between them at right angles and space them 26 inches apart. Screw through the first pair of boards and into the ends of the second pair. Use 8 screws for this task. This is your lathe tool cabinet frame.

    • 2

Drill 18 holes through the last 24-inch board that equal the diameter of your lathe tools. Center the holes along the 3-inch center of the board and space the holes 1 3/8 inches apart. The handles of your tools will fit here.

    • 3

Position the board with the holes in it between the 28-inch boards so that it is parallel with the other 24-inch boards and 6 inches away from only one of them. Screw through the 28-inch boards and into this board using two screws for each end.

    • 4

Lay your plywood over the frame so that the edges are flush with the side of every board that makes up the frame. Screw through the frame using 12 screws so that 3 screws enter the edge of each board. Your lathe tool cabinet is now ready for use.
