How to Truss a Pole Barn

The proper Installation of trusses on a pole barn helps ensure a secure roof. Although experience trussing pole barns is not required, amateurs must use extreme caution, check measurements carefully and work slowly. Roof trussing requires the cooperative effort of at least three people. A pick-up truck is also helpful. Proper roof truss braces must be used to hold trusses in place once they are set and prevent shifting in high winds that could lead to the collapse of the roof.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of your roof to determine how many trusses to order or build. You will need to install one every 4 feet. Place your order at least three weeks prior to when you need to install the trusses.

    • 2

Mark four-foot intervals along the roof line, starting at one end of the barn on opposite walls. Attach hurricane braces with screws over the first mark.

    • 3

Lift one truss onto the roof. It is easiest to place the truss inverted so the peak points toward the floor of the barn. Push the truss near the end of the barn where the hurricane braces are installed.

    • 4

Measure the ends of the truss. Adjust it so there is an equal amount of overhang on each side of the barn frame. Flip the truss upright by hand, or attach it to a pick-up truck hitch or ball with string and poles. Drive the truck forward slowly until the truss rotates into an upright position. Check the overhang measurements and adjust again if necessary.

    • 5

Lift the truss by hand and lower it into the hurricane braces. Secure with screws.

    • 6

Repeat the process of installing braces, raising trusses and positioning into the braces for each truss at every marked interval.
