How to Build Play Stands

Entertain your small children and their young friends with a homemade play stand. A play stand consists of two small, child-sized benches. Each bench has a support beam or dowel at the very top of the bench that is used to have a sheet spread across the two benches. The sheet acts as a roof to the play stand, allowing the children to have their partially enclosed play area. Build your play stand out of pine lumber and plywood in less than an hour spent in a workshop.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a plywood sheet flat and horizontal. Measure 6 inches down from the top left corner along the edge and draw a diagonal line that reaches the top edge, 12 inches away from the top right corner. Flip the board over towards you, so the board is still horizontal and repeat this process. Cut along the lines using the circular saw and repeat this step on the last three sheets of plywood. The narrow ends of the plywood are the top ends of the play stand.

    • 2

Drill a 1/2-inch deep, 1-inch hole into each sheet of plywood so the center of the hole is 3 inches away from the top 3-inch edge of the plywood. The holes are centered, 1 ½ inches away from the corners of the 3-inch edge.

    • 3

Position two plywood sheets upright so they're spaced 30 inches apart and so the holes are facing each other. Insert a dowel into a pair of holes and screw through the plywood, into the dowels. Use one screw for each end. Repeat this step with the other two sheets of plywood.

    • 4

Position a 1-by-15-inch board between a pair of plywood sheets so it is parallel with the dowel and 12 inches away from the floor. Screw four screws through each sheet of plywood and into this board. This is a bench to your play stand. Repeat this step with the other pair of plywood sheets and 1-by-15-inch board.

    • 5

Set a 1-by-4-by-30-inch board perpendicularly between each pair of plywood sheets so it is on edge and 7 inches away from each vertical edge of the plywood. Screw two screws through each sheet and into this board. This board will give the sides to your play stand support. These are the sides to your play stand.

    • 6

Sand both sides using your medium-grade and fine-grade sand paper. Wipe the project clean using your tack cloth. Set the sides next to each other so there is a 30-inch gap between the benches. Cover the stand using a sheet when your children are ready to play in it.
