How Do I Build a Folding Wood Piano Stand?

A folding wood piano stand is a piano accessory that sits on top of a grand piano to hold your sheet music. When the piano stand isn't in use, the device folds to 1 1/2-by-12-by-20 inch dimensions, which will fit into most piano benches that allow storage. Build your folding wood piano stand using oak boards. Oak is often used for decorative woodworking and also used for the construction of many pianos.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your 15-inch plywood from corner to corner into two triangular pieces. The longest edge will form the angle at which your sheet music will stand.

    • 2

Raise the blade on your table saw 1/4-inch and set the fence on your table saw so it is 1 inch away from the blade. Run your 1/2-by-12-by-20-inch board across the table twice while keeping the ends of the board against the fence so you have two 1/8-wide-by-1/4-inch-deep grooves on the same side. This is the board that will hold your sheet music. The plywood from the last step will fit into these grooves.

    • 3

Screw two half-hinges along the 11-inch edge of each triangular piece of plywood so the hinge can fold 270-degrees around the edge. Screw the other pairs of half-hinges to the 20-inch plywood so the 11-inch edges are 1-inch away from the 12-inch edge of the plywood. The pieces fold toward each other. When they are folded in the upright position the longest edges are aligned and the bottom of the longest edges are 1-inch away from one of the 20-inch edges.

    • 4

Lay the 1/2-by-1-20-inch board flat on top of the 20-inch plywood so it is flush with the edge and next to the 1/8-inch plywood pieces. Screw through the bottom of the plywood and into this board using four 1 1/4-inch screws.

    • 5

Screw a pair of half-hinges to the 1/2-by-12-by-20-inch board on the side with the grooves so they are 4 inches away from each end. The pin is flush with the edge of the board. Screw the other pair of half-hinges to the 1/2-by-1-by-20-inch board so the 12-inch-wide board can lift up allow the triangular pieces of plywood to fit inside the grooves.
