What Is a Footprint Sketch?

A footprint sketch is essentially a floor plan that is drawn to scale. In industrial terminology, a footprint refers to an object's surface area, so in the case of a building, a footprint sketch is a drawing of the surface area of that building. A floor plan is used to show the relationship of items within a building to one another.
  1. Included Objects

    • The following objects can be included in a footprint sketch, though depending on how thorough the sketch is, some may be omitted: interior walls, hallways, doors, windows, restrooms, closets, bedrooms, appliances, pools, fireplaces and jacuzzis. Movable objects like tables, couches and beds should be left out. Rooms should be labeled on the sketch.

    Basic Sketch

    • The most basic footprint sketch shows only the outer shell of walls that make up the building's perimeter. A basic footprint sketch should also include the sum square footage of the interior property.

    Advanced Sketch

    • In an advanced sketch, each room is labeled according to its function. The length measurement of each section of outer wall is also displayed. Interior walls might also be shown, as well as objects like toilets, sinks and bathtubs.

    Uses

    • Independent surveyors or real estate appraisers might provide a homeowner with a footprint sketch prior to a full appraisal so the homeowner can assess total gross living area. Realtors and landlords show footprint sketches to prospective home buyers or tenants. Footprint sketches are often posted online so buyers or renters can view the home layout before they arrive.
