Installation of Clear-span Structures

Clear-span structures generally refer to metal buildings that have wide-open space on the interior. This type of structure does not require supporting pillar or columns typically found in other designs. The buildings come in kits and work for a wide variety of purposes, including private spaces, hobby shops or storage for a recreational vehicle or boat.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a copy of the clear structure specification before making a final decision on purchasing a kit. Speak to the local building code inspector to ensure the specifications meet local code requirements, including the type of foundation recommended by the building supplier. Prepare the site and construct the foundation. A common type of foundation consists of a concrete slab on footings.

    • 2

Place the rails around the perimeter. Mark the locations for the concrete anchors on the concrete slab or other foundation. Drill the holes for the anchors with a hammer drill. Secure the rails to the foundation with expansion bolts, adhesive bolts or other fasteners required by local codes.

    • 3

Mark 6-inch lines on the slab to indicate the position of the side posts that run the length of both sides of the structure. Space the marking at the appropriate interval, such as 48, 60 or 72 inches. Follow the instruction for assembling posts for structures exceeding a certain height, such as 10 feet.

    • 4

Position the corner and side posts. Face the base of the post to the inside of the structure. Mark the location for the post anchor. Remove the post and drill the hole with a 5/8-inch drill bit or other size as recommended. Insert the anchor bolt and tap it in place with a hammer. Repeat this process for all posts. Connect the girt, which consists of horizontal bars that provide stability for the posts and a surface for attaching the panels.

    • 5

Bolt the posts to the slab with a washer and nut. Use a carpenter level to plumb the post. Install two 2-by-2 stakes in the ground on each side of the corner posts. Attach two 2-by-4 inch boards to the posts. Secure the ends to the stakes to brace the posts. Install a brace on the center post for each side of the structure.

    • 6

Assemble the end trusses, which support the walls and the roof for the structure. Secure the components with the self-drilling screws provided by the manufacturer. Mount the two end trusses before the interior components. Employ a crane to help position and secure the trusses. Attach the purlins, which are horizontal pieces that form the roof's web and reinforce the structure.

    • 7

Run a string the length of the structure to ensure a straight structure. Check the post to verify the components are plumb. Attach motorcycle straps to the frame. Attach the other end of the straps to the 2-by-2 inch stakes driven in the ground to pull the frame and straighten the structure where necessary.

Install the end enclosure panels of the structure. Follow the packaging instructions for installing insulation. Complete the installation by attaching the wall and roof panels. Install windows, door and accessories according to the manufacturer's instructions.
