Do it Yourself Bar Building

Many small apartment owners dream of having their own bar for entertaining guests. While plans can range from mild to wild, building your own bar is not as hard it sounds. Storage for glasses, liquor and ice can be ready for impromptu parties while fitting nicely in the smallest rooms. As the "Complete Book of Woodworking" notes, if you can dream it, you can make it.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your 2-by-4s to the dimensions of the bar's length and depth. Create the footprint of your new bar by setting out your cut 2-by-4s on the floor.

    • 2

Repeat step one using the same dimensions. Create the top of your new bar by setting out your cut 2-by-4s on the floor.

    • 3

Use screws to connect the four pieces of wood for the base of the bar. Use two screws per joint. Repeat the process to create the top of the bar.

    • 4

Cut four equal lengths of 2-by-4s to establish the bar's height. Set the pieces vertically at each corner of the base. Screw them into the corner pockets at the base of the platform.

    • 5

Place the top section of the bar over the four wall posts. Set the posts into the corner pockets of the top section. Secure each corner with screws.

    • 6

Measure the dimensions of your bar's frame. Cut the paneling to fit the measurements of the two walls and the front. Leave the back of the bar open to access glasses and liquor.

    • 7

Hang your paneling over each section of the bar's walls. Hammer finish nails into the frame at the outermost points.

    • 8

Cut corner molding to fit the bar's height, measuring from the floor to the top of the frame. Glue the molding on the corners to hide the seams between sections of paneling and the nails. Allow the glue to dry for 24 hours.

    • 9

Paint your bar by first applying a coat of primer, followed by a solid color. String a curtain to match over the opening at the back of the bar.

    • 10

Cut a piece of laminate top to fit the bar's dimensions. Drive screws through the frame from underneath to secure the countertop. Ensure the screws aren't so long they push completely through the countertop.
