How to Build a Ferrocement Fence

Quickly build a solid cement fence using ferrocement, which is a harder type of cement that is often using in construction applications. The finished product of this type of cement does not have to be as thick as regular cement to be structurally sound. It is a much denser cement when it has cured. Ferrocement applications include fences, domes, tanks and other types of buildings. They are long-lasting structures that are used widespread across the globe. Build your own ferrocement fence using wire mesh and re-rod. This type of metal will hold the cement in place as it cures.

Instructions

    • 1

Pound your re-rod 24 inches into the ground where you want to build your fence. The re-rod is the main support that will hold your cement and other materials. Hold your level against the re-rod to ensure that it is perpendicular. Space the re-rod 24 inches apart.

    • 2

Cut your 4-inch wire mesh into 24-inch-wide strips and so they equal the height of the re-rod. Tie the sheets to the re-rod.

    • 3

Tie your wire mesh with the 3/4-inch squares to the re-rod on both sides. Tie the mesh every 6 inches on the re-rod. Tie this mesh to the 12-inch vertical center of the 4-inch mesh so it stays ¾ inches away from the mesh. This is your fence frame.

    • 4

Pack the ferrocement through the first layer of mesh starting at the bottom of the fence frame with your trowel. Continue packing cement into the mesh until all of the mesh is covered with cement and then smooth the cement for a finished look.

    • 5

Keep the cement damp for 10 days by spraying it down with a hose twice a day with over cast, and three times a day with sun exposure.
