How to Build a Folding Luggage Holder

Adding a luggage rack to a guest room is a fantastic way to add an extra bit of welcome to your guests. It can also be a great tool for a frequent traveler to facilitate packing and unpacking his luggage. Best of all, it can be folded and stored in a closet or under a bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut four pieces of poplar wood to 22.75-inches long and 2.5-inches wide using a saw. Cut two pieces of wood to 24-inches long and 2.5-inches wide using a saw. Cut two pieces of wood to 20.75-inches long and 2.5-inches wide using a saw. Use sandpaper to smooth any rough edges.

    • 2

Cut five strips of fabric into strips that are 3.5-inches wide. Fold a 1/4-inch edge of the fabric underneath as a hem along the long side of the fabric strip. Press the edge with an iron and then stitch the hem on each side of the fabric.

    • 3

Cut each of the fabric strips at 27.5-inches long and fold the raw edge back about 1/4 inch. Press the edge with an iron. Fold each of the ends back approximately 3.5 inches. Stitch each piece along the area where it is three layers deep to create a pocket for the board to slide through. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for each strip of fabric.

    • 4

Drill a hole through each of the legs approximately 13.5 inches from the bottom. Insert the spacer through the hole in one of the legs. Place a flat washer over the spacer and slip the spacer through the other leg. Tap them together with a hammer if needed.

    • 5

Slip a flat head washer onto the machine screw. Insert the screw through the spacer and slip another washer onto the screw. Place the stop nut on the screw to hold the legs in place. Repeat Step 4 and 5 for the other set of legs.

    • 6

Open one set of the legs until they form an X. Make a mark approximately 4-inches up from the bottom. Clamp the bottom braces (20.75-inch pieces of wood) in place using a bar clamp.

    • 7

Drill a hole at the mark and into the brace piece. Screw the brace into place with wood screws. Add wood glue to hold the pieces more securely. Repeat Steps 6 and 7 for the other set of legs.

    • 8

Slide each side of the fabric pieces onto the remaining two boards (the top boards that are 24 inches long).

    • 9

Place one of the boards onto the top of one of the leg assemblies so that it is flush with the inside edge.

    • 10

Drill a hole through the top board and into one of the legs on each side. Spread some glue onto the top of the leg and insert a wood screw into the hole. Repeat Steps 9 and 10 for the other half of the bracing piece.

    • 11

Pull the legs back and forth to confirm the luggage rack is working properly.
