How to Build a Port-a-Potty Enclosure

Everyone deserves privacy when using the bathroom. That's why building an enclosure for your port-a-potty will add comfort to any reunion or camping experience. A port-a-potty enclosure is a wood framed structure that fits around any portable toilet. They provide privacy and ventilation for long term use. Build your own port-a-potty enclosure using pine lumber and plywood. Build a basic door with these materials and fasten the door with hinges that can be found at any hardware store.

Instructions

    • 1

Drill four 4-inch holes through each 84-inch plywood so there are two holes at each 36-inch end, spaced 5 inches apart and 2 inches away from the 36-inch edges. These are the vents to your port-a-potty enclosure.

    • 2

Lay two 84-inch boards parallel so their outside edges are 36 inches apart. Lay a sheet of plywood on top of the boards and screw the plywood to the boards using 8 screws for each board. Space the screws 12 inches apart. This is a side to your port-a-potty enclosure. Repeat this step to build the opposite side.

    • 3

Position the sides of your enclosure upright and parallel so the outside edges of the plywood are 36 inches apart. The boards are between the plywood sheets. Position another plywood sheet against this pair of sides so the corners are flush. Screw the plywood to the boards using 16 screws spaced 12 inches apart. This is your enclosure frame.

    • 4

Lay the 37 1/2-inch plywood on top of the frame so the edges are flush. Screw four screws through the plywood and into the ends of the pine boards. Use one screw for each pine board.

    • 5

Screw two half-hinges to the last 84-inch plywood so they are along one of the 84-inch edges. Space the hinges 40 inches apart so they are 18 inches away from the 36-inch edges of the plywood. The hinge should be able to fold around the outside of the edge, 270-degrees. This is the door to your enclosure. Screw the other half-hinges to one of the pine boards that are on the enclosure so when the door closes, the edges of the plywood are flush with the outside edges of the enclosure.

Screw the door handles to the door, 36 inches above the ground and on the opposite side with the hinges. There is one handle on the inside of the door and one handle on the outside of the door. Screw the swivel hook to the inside of the enclosure so the door can stay closed when in use.
