How to Set Rebar in Concrete

Construction workers place rebar into the footings and foundations of buildings and other structures. This rebar acts as a reinforcement in case cracks or weaknesses in the structure occur, preventing the structure from collapse. The workers pour concrete completely over the rebar, which is set in a grid pattern to offer the most support. The amount of rebar used is based on the engineer's plans.

Things You'll Need

  • #3, 3/8-inch rebar
  • Bar supports
  • 4-inch-long wire ties
  • Rebar tying tool

Instructions

    • 1

Space the rebar in the grid pattern, normally 24 inches for patios or 16 inches for driveways. Place bar supports under the horizontal and vertical bars to keep the rebar off the ground.

    • 2

Wrap the wire ties where the horizontal bar and vertical bars intersect using the rebar tying tool. Wrap a piece 1 1/2 times on the horizontal piece at the top as you make a "wrap and saddle" pattern.

    • 3

Tie the rebar in a counterclockwise motion at the intersection. Wrap once around the vertical bar on the left side, the bottom piece of the horizontal bar and then the vertical bar on the right side. Wrap the ends of the wire together.

    • 4

Push the end of the wire down against the rebar. Continue tying the rebar at each intersection. Pour the concrete over the rebar.
