How to Troubleshoot Resin Projects

You can create jewelry, statues and other projects by casting resin in a mold. The mold can be made out of clay, wood or rubber. If done improperly, the resin casting may be ruined and you may have to build a new mold or cast the resin again. Perform troubleshooting on the failed casting to determine why the resin cast came out wrong.

Instructions

    • 1

Empty the resin from the wood mold if the resin leaks through joints immediately after adding the liquid. Clean the mold with acetone and allow to dry for at least two hours. Apply silicone caulk to all the joints and cracks to seal the wood mold. Place the resin into mold after the caulk cures.

    • 2

Remix the resin components if the resin is still in a liquid state, or soft and sticky, after the proper time has elapsed for it to cure and solidify. Scrape the previous resin from the mold with the scrapper tool.

    • 3

Wipe out the mold with acetone and a clean rag. Add the new batch of resin to the mold after the mold dries.

    • 4

Recast the mold if you cannot remove it from the resin because it bonded to the mold. Apply a mold release agent to the new mold before adding the liquid resin.
