How to Make a Bench Top Podium

A bench top podium offers you everything that a full size podium offers without the bulk. They have a storage area underneath the slanted top to hold books and papers and they store easily because they don't have legs. Instructions

    • 1

Lay your 16 inch by 20 inch plywood flat and horizontal. Draw a line starting from the top left corner that angles away from the 16-inch edge and ends 4 inches below the top right corner. Repeat this process on the other 16 inch by 20 inch sheet of plywood.

    • 2

Lay two 20 inch boards parallel with their outside edges 16 inches apart. Set a 16 inch by 20 inch sheet of plywood on top of the boards so the edges and ends are flush and so you can see the line that you drew in the last step. Screw the plywood to the boards using two screws for each board. Do not screw on the line, You will cut this portion of the plywood and boards off in the next step. This is one side to your podium. Repeat this step using the last sheet of plywood with the line and the last two boards.

    • 3

Cut along the diagonal line on both sheets of plywood with your band saw. The angle will give your bench top podium a slanted spot for your books or documents.

    • 4

Position the sides on their 16 inch edges so they are parallel with their angle cuts aligned. Space the sides so their outside surfaces are 17 inches apart. Lay your 17 inch by 18 inch by 3/4 inch plywood on top of the slanted edges so the corners are flush. Screw four screws through the plywood so one screw enters the end of each board. This is the top to your bench top podium.

    • 5

Position the 17 inch by 20 inch plywood against the back of the podium with the 20 inch sides so the edges are flush. Screw two screws into each board to secure this sheet. Stick an adhesive pad to the bottom end of each board. This will keep any bench or table from getting scratched.
