Instructions

  1. Slab Foundation

    • 1

Build a 4-inch thick concrete slab. Lay out the 30-by-40 foot measurements by driving a 1-by-2 inch stake into each of the corners. Pull a string around the perimeter. Dig the footing around the perimeter of the slab 12 to 18 inches deep. Speak to a building code inspector to find out the specifications for concrete foundations.

    • 2

Build the form around the perimeter of the footing from 2-by-4 inch lumber. Screw the ends of the boards together. Hammer stakes into the ground behind the form every 48 inches. Compact the soil bed. Install a layer of gravel in accordance with local building codes.

    • 3

Place reinforcement bars around the footing trench. Pour the concrete. Place wire mesh at the two-inch level, and continue with the pour.

    Walls

    • 4

Construct the walls sections from 2-by-4 inch lumber. Cut the top and bottom plates for each wall section the same length. Cut the studs the length of the wall minus 4 ½ inches -- the thickness of a bottom plate and double top plate.

    • 5

Nail the end studs between the top and bottom plate with 16d nails. Secure the remaining studs 16 inches on center. Build the rough opening for the doors and windows when constructing the applicable wall section.

    • 6

Snap a chalk line around the perimeter at least 2 ½ inches from the outer edge of the slab. Line the out side edge of the wall’s bottom plate on the line. Drill the hole for the wedge anchor bolts with a hammer drill outfitted with a carbide – tipped masonry bit. Clean up the debris with a shop vacuum.

    • 7

Place the washer and nut on the head of the anchor bolt. Insert the bolt through the bottom plate into the hole. Hammer the bolt to the require depth and tighten. Complete the remaining walls sections in the same manner. Apply ¾-inch CDX plywood for the exterior walls. Join the wall sections together with 2 ½ inch galvanized wood screws.

    Frame Roof

    • 8

Frame the two halves roof with pre-engineered common trusses. Use a fork truck to lift the trusses in place. Position the center truss. Straighten and plumb the trusses. Secure in place with as recommended by the truss manufacturer. Mark 24 inches lines along the walls. Install the remaining up to the hip on each end.

    • 9

Build the fist hip component of the roof. Make a 22 ½ degree plumb cut on the top end of the rafter and at the tail end of the rafter. Install the common rafter, which leads from the center of the wall plate to the peak of end truss.

    • 10

Cut the two hip rafters. Install each the hip rafter diagonally – 45, degree angle, from the corner of the top plate to the peak. Cut the jack rafters and nail to the hip rafters -- on both sides. Complete the other hip roof section.

    • 11

Secure CDX ¾-inch plywood to the roof with galvanized nails. Staple 15 pound roofing felt to the roof. Install shingles or other roof covering according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
