Do It Yourself Pedestal Table Using Rustic Containers

Pedestal tables are simple and beautiful additions to any room because of their versatility. Typically, they are made of wood or wicker and the signature features are the thick central leg and round table top. A small pedestal table can be used as a coffee or tea nook inside or outside, and a larger one can serve as a dinner table for five. A small pedestal table will cost you about $250 as of October 2011, while a large one will run you over $1000. You can jazz up this design and bring down the cost significantly by making a pedestal table yourself out of rustic containers.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a planter or outdoor yard fountain with an urn shape, preferably with a wide opening at the top of the urn. Total height of the planter should be approximately 1 meter. You may be able to buy an inexpensive one at a yard sale or auction.

    • 2

Invert the planter or fountain so that it is upside down, with the widest part now functioning as the base. This gives your pedestal table better stability.

    • 3

Settle the half barrel on top of the planter so that the sides hang down toward the ground. If they appear too long, you can trim them as desired.

    • 4

Attach the barrel to the stand with wood glue. Weight the top of the table with books, tools or other heavy objects as the glue dries. Reinforce the attachment with four nails hammered through the top of the barrel and into the pedestal. Space the nails equally for the greatest stability.

Paint or stain the half barrel. Because the wood is porous, you will need to seal it before painting or plan several coats of stain, since the wood will absorb it. Finish with a spray veneer.
