Addition Ideas for a Front to Back Split Level Home

Front to back split-level homes have two distinct levels with front entrances and a design flow from the front of the house to the back. Homes that are a few years or decades old might be in need of a facelift. Also, a growing family might need an addition for more living space. Permits are always a must when doing home renovations, whether you hire a contractor or do it yourself.
  1. Bedroom

    • One idea for a front to back split-level home addition is to add a bedroom on the back of the home. Adding it to the back is usually easier than adding it to the front of the home because the front is street-facing and space is often more limited in the front of the property. You can add a ground-level bedroom, or consider a more elaborate two-level addition, with a new bedroom on both levels of the house.

    Indoor/Outdoor Addition

    • Another option is to build an indoor/outdoor room on the back of the home. This is especially popular for homes in areas with four distinct season. The room can be screened in or open during warmer months, and in the winter, you can replace the screens with glass so you can still use the room. This is an effective idea for people who like to entertain or spend time in their backyards year-round.

    Patio

    • An outdoor patio is another addition option. This gives a family living in a front to back split level home an outdoor living space to enjoy during warm weather months. Consider a built-in barbecue grill and other outdoor kitchen appliances, like a stove or refrigerator. You can also add a bar, some outdoor furniture or even an outdoor TV or fire pit for cooler evenings.

    Family Room

    • If your family is cramped for more space in your front to back split-level home, consider adding on a family room or other room to hang out in. Like the other additions, this one likely will go on the back of the home. The front or side of the home are options if space permits as well. You can make this room comfortable and appealing for the whole family with an entertainment center and a fireplace. Like the bedroom idea, you can make this addition to both levels of the home, and add an extra bedroom or play room on the second level above the new family room.
