How to Cut Deck Stairs

Deck stairs can be one of the trickiest parts of your deck to cut, especially since cutting them to the correct size is critical to ensure the safety of your finished project. Learning how to cut new stairs can be useful when replacing worn out stairs or when starting a new project. Once you configure the measurements for the first stair, the remaining steps are simple to cut. Check with your local building inspector to know exactly what the codes are before you begin any project.

Determine how many stairs you will need to cut. If you already have a riser built, you can cut the correct number of stairs to fit the riser. Calculate the number of steps by placing a board from the deck level to the ground. The board should be placed at a 45-degree angle. Place a level on the middle board to adjust the position of the angle. Divide the length of the board by seven, which is the distance between each step. Round to the closest number if you have a remainder. This will give you the number of stairs needed.

Calculate the width needed for each step. Measure the distance from the back of the riser to the front. This is where the step will be placed. Use a tape measure to get the exact measurement.

Configure the length of the stair. Measure the distance from one riser to the other. The stair will be placed on top of the risers to create the step. Use a tape measure and measure from the outside edge of the riser to the outside edge of the opposite riser.

Cut the wood to the exact measurements using a circular saw. Use 2-by-12s or 2-by-6s for the stair material. Place the board on top of the risers to ensure that it is the correct size. Once you cut the first stair you can use this as a template to cut the remaining stairs. Place the stair on top of another piece of uncut wood and mark it to the correct length with a pencil.
