How High Should I Install Electrical Outlets in a Wall?

If you are taking the time and effort to install an electrical outlet, you want to be sure you install it in the best possible location. There are a few things to keep in mind before you begin wiring and cutting holes in your wall. Remember to take all factors into consideration before you begin.
  1. Building Codes

    • The U.S. National Electrical Code has determined that outlets should be within 6 feet of the corner of a home. However, some areas have local building codes that regulate the height of outlet placement, as well. It is extremely important -- before you begin any project -- that you check with your local building department for regulations specific to your area.

    Convenience

    • Most outlets are located between 10 to 14 inches from the top of the floor to the bottom of the electrical box. However, you should take into consideration the design of the room and your needs when adding outlets. For example, if you are planning on installing a TV and media center on one side of the room, you may want to install an additional outlet in that area to accommodate the number of electronic devices.

    Home Additions

    • If you are installing electrical outlets in a home addition or in a room you are finishing, like a basement, measure the height of the electrical outlets in the other areas of your home. You will want to match the height of the outlets in your addition to the height of the outlets in the original areas of your home, to create a uniform look.

    Safety Considerations

    • Always shut off the electricity to the building or room you are working in before touching any wires. Use a voltage tester to double-check that the power is off. Be sure to follow all building codes and safety guidelines for wiring outlets to circuits. If you are unsure of how to proceed at any time, stop and consult a professional electrician.
