How to Remove a Shower Pan With a Metal Flange

Shower pans are a single piece of fiberglass that drops into the bottom of a shower enclosure. The center of the pan has a round opening through which a metal drain flange fits, thus connecting it to the underlying plumbing pipes. To remodel the shower enclosure, you must remove the shower pan from the floor. Pan removal requires mainly that you cut out the rubber from around the metal flange portion so that you can detach it.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a turkey baster in the center of the metal flange and suck up as much moisture as possible before depositing it into a bucket. Once no more water comes out, pour the water into a nearby sink or toilet. Removing the water prevents it from splashing up during the pan removal process.

    • 2

Cut along all edges of the shower pan using a utility knife to break any caulk strips that are located there.

    • 3

Insert an old rag into the center of the drain hole. Install a 1/4-inch bit into a power drill and drill out the rubber gasket located around the inside perimeter of the metal flange.

    • 4

Look at the sides of the shower pan to determine if screws hold it to the wall studs. If screws are present, remove each with the power drill

    • 5

Access the underside of the shower by either entering a basement area or a crawlspace. Locate the PVC drain pipe that connects to the metal flange on the pan and cut through it using a reciprocating saw.

Walk back to the bathroom and insert a pry bar under the front edge of the shower pan. Push down on the pry bar to lift it up until you can grasp it with gloved hands. Pull the shower pan straight up from the floor. You may need to press down on the center drain with a screwdriver to help pry the drain up from the floor.
