How to Install Marlite FRP in a Bathroom

Marlite is a brand of fiberglass reinforced paneling (FRP) installed mainly in public locations, such as bathrooms. It comes in a variety of colors and textures, and even novices can install the panels without assistance. Marlite FRP requires only careful measurement and the application of adhesive to secure them to the bathroom walls. In addition, some cutting is required to fit the panels around fixtures such as sinks, vanities or toilets.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Marlite FRP. Place it in the installation location for 48 hours prior to installation to allow it to acclimate. The temperature of the installation location must maintain 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 2

Remove all floor molding as well as door and window trim from the bathroom using a pry bar to detach the nails. Turn off the water shut off valve behind the toilet, and then use a wrench to disconnect the line from the valve. This makes it easier to slide the panel into place over the valve.

    • 3

Wipe down the walls from top to bottom using a tack cloth to ensure they are free of dust and dirt, which interfere with the holding power of the adhesive.

    • 4

Measure the length of one of the bathroom walls using a tape measure. Divide the measurement in half, and locate the center of the wall. Stretch a chalk line from the top to the bottom of the wall in the location. Snap it to create a reference line.

    • 5

Turn a Marlite FRP face-down, and open a tub of FRP adhesive. Scoop out 1 cup of the adhesive using a 1/4-inch notched trowel. Spread the adhesive over the back of the panel using the trowel so that it maintains a 1/4-inch thick layer. Stop the adhesive 1 inch from the edge to prevent it from oozing out.

    • 6

Pick up the first panel, and turn the adhesive side toward the wall. Press the edge of the panel up to the reference line on the wall, and press it firmly from the center to the edges using your hands to secure it firmly.

    • 7

Apply adhesive to a second Marlite FRP just as you did with the first one. Place the shaft of a 6 penny nail beside the first panel, and then press the second panel into place beside the nail. The 6 penny nail produces the proper spacing between panels.

    • 8

Continue installing panels on the wall until you reach an area of the bathroom that requires you to cut the panel down. Measure the proper width and length of the wall area with a tape measure. Lay a panel face-down. Mark the width and length of the wall area measurements on it with the tape measure and a pencil. Don safety glasses, and cut the panel using a power saw. Spread adhesive on the panel and attach it to the wall.

    • 9

Apply vertical strips of painter’s tape to each seam between the panels. Cut down the center of the tape using a utility knife to create a groove between the panels.

    • 10

Apply silicone caulk from the top to the bottom of the grooves, and smooth the line with your finger. Wait until the caulk dries completely, which usually takes two to three hours, and then peel off the tape.

    • 11

Reinstall the molding and trim, and reconnect the toilet water supply.
