How to Get Rid of Brassy Glass Doors

When people buy a home, it's common for them to want to give the home's bathroom a complete renovation. While saving as many elements of the bathroom as possible is ideal, some parts are too dated to salvage. Glass shower and tub doors with brass hardware are common in homes, but they are a dated, simple style. Instead of just pulling out the doors and throwing them in the garbage, you can get rid of them in several useful ways.

Instructions

Remove the brassy glass doors from the tub or shower enclosure as carefully as possible so they remain in ideal condition. If the enclosure's construction is typical, you should be able to remove the doors by unscrewing the upper track and lifting the doors off the lower track. Clean the doors thoroughly with shower cleaner to make getting rid of them easier.

List the doors for sale on one or more classified sales websites in your city. Set the price at an amount based on what comparable doors sell for at a bathroom store. You're unlikely to get a significant amount of money for the doors, but any money you make will help pay for your renovation project. If you don't have any luck selling the doors online, and think you'll have better luck selling the hardware and glass individually, take the doors apart and create the appropriate sales listings.

Attempt to sell the doors as part of a garage sale. Though you might not be able to get 100 percent of your asking price for the doors, exposing them to sellers in person is ideal.

Contact a contractor about buying the doors and/or the hardware. If the door hinges and screws are real brass, instead of plastic painted brass coloring, a contractor who specializes in bathrooms might be interested. Likewise, a contractor who works with glass might be interested in the glass doors, either to use as doors or to cut to salvage the glass.

Transport the doors to a charity that accepts items used for renovations, such as Habitat for Humanity. Though you will not be paid for your donation, some charities provide a receipt that proves you made a charitable donation, and you can use the donation as a deduction to lower your federal tax. Also, your donation will help someone in need.
