How to Build a Jacuzzi Drop-In Frame

Jacuzzis are available in drop-in or freestanding versions. Drop-in Jacuzzis are commonly found in bathrooms and built-in outdoor installations while freestanding tubs are typically placed onto existing decks or in open spaces. Drop-in Jacuzzi tubs require a solid base on which to rest, and a wooden framework that surrounds and encloses them. The framework is built to completely mask the open sides of the tub, leaving only the finished top visible. A small deck, tile, or any number of decorative solutions can be added to the wooden framework once installed. The process of building a Jacuzzi drop-in frame requires only some basic tools and a bit of DIY skill.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of your Jacuzzi tub from the bottom to the underside of the lip which overhangs on all sides. Measure the depth (front to back), and width of the tub not including the overhanging lip. Factor in the required amount of space between the outside edge of the Jacuzzi and the inside edge of the framework. Water pressure and heat will cause the Jacuzzi to expand when in use. Check with your manufacturer's instructions to learn the proper spacing for your particular model.

    • 2

Cut 2-by-4-inch lumber to the width and depth of the tub with your circular saw so that you have 8 cut pieces. These will serve as the top and bottom plates of the tub framework. Cut more 2-by-4s to the height of the tub, minus 3 inches to account for the top and bottom plates. These vertical cripple studs will install between the top and bottom plates to form the framework.

    • 3

Assemble the framework on a flat surface. Lay out a bottom plate and attach the cripple studs starting 3 inches from one end, and placing one every 16 inches on center after that. Install your last stud 3 inches from the other end of the plate. Use your hammer and nails to attach the cripple studs so they are flush with both the inside and outside edges of the bottom plate. Drive nails through the plate and into the end of each stud.

    • 4

Attach the top plate onto the open ends of the cripple studs which extend upward from the bottom plate. Use your hammer and nails to fasten them in place. Repeat the assembly process for each of the four frame walls.

    • 5

Tilt the rear and side framework walls into position around the installation location. Use your level to check that the framework is plumb and use wooden shims to adjust if necessary. Drive a 16 pound nail through the bottom plate and into the floor joist below at each joist location along the length of the plate. Repeat the process with each of the other plates until you have the Jacuzzi frame fastened in place. Drive nails through the studs and plates at each corner to fasten the frame pieces to one another.

Slide the tub into the open frame and attach the plumbing. Install the front piece of frame after sliding the tub in place between the rear and side framing. This eliminates the need to lift the heavy Jacuzzi unit over the completed frame. Install the front frame with your hammer and nails in the same manner as you installed the side and rear frames.
