Instructions

    • 1

Remove the grout from between the tiles in the uneven tile floor by chipping the grout away about ¼ inch at a time with a flat-head screwdriver and hammer. Pry the tiles up from the floor with a putty knife, using a hammer to tap the knife beneath each tile ¼ inch to ½ inch at a time until the tiles come up. Soak the tiles in a bucket of warm water for several hours to soften the adhesive and scrape the wet adhesive off the tile with a hard-bristled cleaning brush.

Scrub the surface of the shower floor with sandpaper or a wire cloth to remove the adhesive from the shower floor. Pick up the adhesive bits with a wet rag.

    • 3

Set a flat wood board down on the floor in the corner. Look for dips or low spots in the floor beneath the board and mark the spots. Fill in the spots with leveling compound, let the compound dry and sand the compound down until it sits level with the floor’s surface.

Check the surface of the floor with the board again to ensure that the floor surface sits level. Remove any dust from the floor surface with a wet rag.

    • 5

Reinstall the tile onto the leveled floor surface using thinset mortar. Spread the mortar with a notched trowel to ensure that the mortar base is level and push the tiles down the same amount into the mortar to the same depth to keep the tiles even. Let the mortar set up for 48 hours before putting any pressure onto the surface to keep tiles from moving as they set up.
