How to Add a Shower to a Corner Tub

Corner tubs get their names from the way they sit snugly in one corner of your bathroom. They are often larger than traditional tubs that are bordered by walls on three sides. While they are perfect for a long soak, you can add versatility to them by adding a shower for times when you don’t have time for a leisurely bath.

Things You'll Need

  • Hand-held mountable showerhead with flexible hose and mounting kit
  • Tub spout with diverter outlet
  • Screwdriver
  • Pipe wrench
  • Short brass nipple

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your current tub spout. Insert the screwdriver into the mouth of the spout and turn it counterclockwise until it is loose enough to turn by hand. Pull it off the water supply nipple and set it off to one side.

    • 2

Mark the front of the nipple sticking out of the wall with a star or the letter F using the marker. Unscrew the nipple from the supply pipe with the pipe wrench. The short brass nipple you will replace the old nipple with needs to be the same diameter as the front of the old nipple. If you don’t have the right size, take the old one with you to a home improvement store and use it as a guide to purchase the correct short brass nipple.

Screw the new brass nipple onto the water supply pipe. Wrap the threaded front end of the nipple with plumber’s tape to ensure a tight seal. Screw the new tub spout with diverter outlet onto the brass nipple.

    • 4

Attach the flexible shower hose to the diverter outlet on the tub spout. Tighten it by hand and finish connecting it by using the adjustable wrench. Hold the shower head up to the wall to determine where you wish to mount it. Once you have decided, hold the mounting bracket against the wall where it will mount and mark the screw hole locations with the marker.

Drill holes in the places you marked on the wall using the glass and tile bit. Hold anchors from the mounting kit up to the holes and gently tap them inside the holes with the mallet. Screw the shower head mounting bracket into the wall with the screwdriver.
