How to Convert a Porcelain Bathtub to an Adjustable Shower With a Slide-Bar Handheld Shower Head

According to an article in the "Chicago Tribune," bathing trends have shifted from bathtubs to showers. While some homeowners are removing their bathtubs in favor of shower stalls, a more economical choice is to simply convert the bathtub to an adjustable shower with a slide-bar handheld shower head. Depending on the type of tub spout, it may be necessary to replace the spout with one that fits the shower equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old tub spout. Underneath the spout where it attaches to the wall, there's an Allen bolt. Use the Allen wrench to pry the bolt loose. Wrap the tub faucet with cloth to prevent scratching the surface with the wrench. If you have a tub spout that screws on, insert a screwdriver where the spout attaches to the wall, and turn the spout counterclockwise to remove it.

    • 2

Replace the tub spout with a new spout that can accommodate the shower equipment. If it's a screw-on spout, before re-attaching it, put Teflon tape around the threads to help prevent leaking.

    • 3

Determine the location of the slide bar. Decide if you'll be standing or seated when you use it -- to help determine where to place the bar. Use a pencil or pen to mark the desired location on the wall.

    • 4

Mount the slide bar on the wall. Depending on your model, you may have a suction cup and an adhesive pad included with the slide bar. If so, remove the suction cup from the slide bar by rotating the cup counterclockwise, and then place it on the adhesive pad. The slide bar contains screws. Use these to secure the slide bar on the wall.

Attach the shower head to the slide bar by rotating the shower head clockwise with one hand, while holding the slide bar steady with the other hand.

    • 6

Attach the shower head to the tub faucet by screwing it into the tub-faucet spout.
