Installation Details for Frameless Window Doors

The frameless window doors installed on many showers offer a seamless look that can show off the beauty of a shower's tiles and make the bathroom appear larger. Instead of sliding in a frame, The doors open and close on hinges. Unless the shower is small and surrounded with three walls, the frameless window door usually is part of a larger glass shower system. Frameless window doors for showers generally come with all the components you need, such as hinges, to help simplify the installation process.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area where you plan to install the frameless window door so you can order the correct size. If there are no seals on the walls that will be on either side of the shower door, the opening between the door and the wall should be no more than 1/4 to 5/16 of an inch. If one of the walls has a seal, the gap between the wall and the door should only measure 3/8 of an inch. If both walls have a seal, the gap should measure 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch.

    • 2

Attach the included hinges and gaskets to the glass door. The frameless door will have guides on it that serve two purposes: They show you where to place the hinges, and they help keep the hinges in place after you install the door. Do not use a power drill to tighten the screws on the back plate; the pressure could cause the glass to crack. Use a manual screwdriver.

    • 3

Attach the door handles that come with the hardware kit on either side of the glass door.

    • 4

Hold the shower door vertically between the walls of the shower, and place it on a 3/8-inch wood shim to slightly raise it off the floor. Use more than one shim if needed.

    • 5

Hold the door upright with the aid of a helper, and use a level to make sure it is correctly aligned between the shower walls. Use a pencil or grease pen to mark the positions of the hinges and the locations to insert the masonry screws on the wall.

    • 6

Carefully set the frameless glass door down, and drill holes in the marked wall locations. Unless otherwise indicated, use a 1/4-inch masonry bit. If you do not drill into a stud, insert masonry wall anchors in the drilled holes.

    • 7

Attach the frameless window door to the wall by securing the hinges to the wall with screws. Place screws in the outermost holes on the top hinge first, followed by the outermost holes on the bottom hinge. Then insert the remaining screws.

    • 8

Install a vinyl sweep on the bottom of the glass door. The sweep should slightly draw along the floor and should extend to each wall. The tight fit will help prevent leaks when the shower is running.
