Cutting Cultured Marble Shower Walls

Cultured marble, made from crushed stone, resins and pigments, is a popular material used in bathroom remodeling. Easier to install than quarried marble and waterproof due to a lustrous gel coating, cultured marble lends a high-end look to a bathroom. Cultured marble is generally purchased in rectangular sheets that can be cut to fit and installed by the handy homeowner with the proper tools and technique. Although cultured marble is hard and durable, its surface is subject to chipping and splintering during installation if not handled properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the areas where the cultured marble shower wall panels will be installed. Mark areas where holes need to be cut to accommodate bath fixtures. Write the measurements down on a piece of paper for reference.

    • 2

Place the cultured marble sheet face up on a stable surface and secure it with C-clamps. The clamps keep the material from sliding around on the workspace during cutting.

    • 3

Transfer the measurements onto the cultured marble and mark it with a carpenter's pencil.

    • 4

Put on eye protection and a respirator mask.

    • 5

Cut the cultured marble with the circular saw. Avoid pushing against the marble; let the circular saw do the work. Slow down a little when you reach the end to achieve a clean cut. Drill any holes needed to fit around pipes or shower fixtures with the hole saw, leaving at least 1/4 inch of clearance.

Smooth cut edges with 60-grit sandpaper.
