Mounting a Kohler Pedestal Sink

A pedestal sink may be the right choice for your bathroom if you are looking for a more traditional look. A Kohler pedestal sink comes in two parts -- the pedestal and the sink basin. Both parts are made from porcelain china and take up less floor space in your bathroom than a vanity cabinet -- a trait that may be of value in small bathrooms with limited floor space. The pedestal and the basin must be installed and mounted securely to the floor and wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the sink pedestal in the desired mounting position. Peel the backing from two of the thin foam pads and adhere them to the underside of the sink basin. Lift the basin and place it onto the pedestal. Push both pieces as needed so that the back side of the sink basin is flush against the wall. Remove and replace the foam pads if necessary to achieve this.

    • 2

Make pencil marks on the wall using the mounting holes in the back side of the basin as a guide. Draw the outline of the back side of the pedestal onto the wall lightly with a pencil. Make a pencil mark in the floor through the mounting hole in the bottom of the pedestal.

    • 3

Lift the basin from the pedestal and place it aside. Move the pedestal from the wall.

    • 4

Drill 3/16-inch holes with a power drill on each of the pencil marks.

    • 5

Remove a section of drywall using a utility knife if one or both of the holes drilled into the wall to mount the basin did not fall on a wall stud. Stay within the outline of the basin drawn on the wall when making a cut, or it will show once the basin is installed. Save the piece of drywall you cut out. Measure and cut a 2-by-4-inch piece of lumber to fit between the two closest wall studs where the basin will be mounted. Secure the piece with 16D nails driven in with a hammer. Replace the removed section of drywall and secure it with 8D nails. Redrill the holes through the newly added wood backing, if necessary. Skip this step if the holes drilled into the wall fell on wall studs or other wood structural members.

    • 6

Twist the course threads of the two basin wall hanger bolts -- included with the sink -- into the drilled holes in the wall with pliers. Leave 1 1/2 inches of the bolt protruding from the wall.

    • 7

Position the mounting hole in the bottom of the pedestal over the drilled hole in the floor. Lift and place the basin onto the pedestal, ensuring that the ends of the hanger bolts protrude through the mounting holes in the back of the basin. Ensure the back of the basin is flush with the wall and level. Thread the nuts onto the ends of the fine threads of the bolts a few turns by hand. Finish tightening the nuts with a wrench. Do not over-tighten the nuts or the basin could be damaged.

Place the washer over the lag bolt included with the sink. Thread the lag bolt through the mounting hole in the pedestal and into the hole in the floor. Tighten the bolt with a wrench. Do not over-tighten the bolt or the pedestal could be damaged.
