How to Build a Bathtub Mount

Bathtubs are installed either as a drop-in, as an undermount or in an alcove. All three types require the installer to build structural framing to support it.
Each bathtub comes with its own specific installation instructions, which can be quite different from model to model. Many are shipped with pre-attached levelling wood at the bottom of the tub so that the tub is properly mounted for good drainage. It is wise to carefully read the installation instructions before purchasing.

Instructions

  1. Drop-in Bathtub Mount

    • 1

Carefully read installation instructions that come with the bathtub. If the bathtub will be mounted against a wall, attach a 2-by-4 wood stringer to each wall at the correct height, as indicated in the instruction manual. For any sides of the tub that are not adjacent to a wall, a wood frame must be built. Cut to size 2-by-4 wood planks and attach them to the plywood floor in the appropriate location with wood screws. Attach vertical studs at 12-to-16 inches on center, and a 2-by-4 on top.

    • 2

For a free-standing bathtub, build a rectangular box with 2-by-4 framing cut to the appropriate size. Attach the bottom 2-by-4 wood to the floor with wood screws. Attach vertical studs at 12-to-16 inches on center, and a 2-by-4 on top.

    • 3

Cut an appropriate hole in the plywood floor and pull piping through before installing the bathtub. Attach the overflow pipes and drain to the tub according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 4

Place the tub into the correct position in the frame. Secure the tub to the frame either with epoxy or with nails driven through the edge of the tub and into the wood framing studs.

    • 5

Connect the drain and overflow pipe from the tub to the downpipe. Attach water supply pipes and faucets. Test for leakage before use.
