Painting a Formica Vanity

Formica countertops are found in many homes. These countertops are usually located in the kitchen, but can also be found on bathroom vanities. Formica countertops are common in bathrooms because they hold up well to water and other wear and tear. Older homes often have Formica countertops in old or outdated colors. Painting your countertops will change the look of the Formica without the cost of installing new countertops. The project will take a week or two because you have to wait for the paint to dry between coats.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down the Formica vanity countertops with a rag and a degreasing cleaner.

    • 2

Sand the Formica on the vanity with an electric hand sander and fine grit sandpaper. Sand the Formica until you have removed the gloss from the surface. Roughing up the surface of the countertops will prepare them for paint. Use a damp cloth to remove sanding dust from the Formica.

    • 3

Coat the Formica with a bonding primer meant for plastics, such as XIM. The primer should come in a spray can. Apply a light layer of primer on the countertop and then let it dry.

    • 4

Coat the primed Formica vanity with oil-based paint. Use a foam paint roller and paintbrush to paint the vanity countertop. Let the paint dry for two days.

    • 5

Sand the countertop by hand to remove any bumps in the paint. Remove the sanding dust with a damp cloth. Apply another coat of oil-based paint to the countertop with a foam paint roller and paintbrush. Let the paint dry for two days and repeat a third time. Allow the last coat of paint to dry for several days before using the vanity.
