How to Drain Water From Pipes to Install a New Sink

Before you can begin disassembling a sink’s faucet, whether you are looking to install a new sink or you just need to replace a valve cartridge that is allowing the faucet to leak, you must drain the water from the sink’s water supply pipes. Failure to drain the water from the pipes results in water spraying out of the faucet as you begin to take it apart. You must know the location of your house’s main water valve to drain the pipes.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the main water valve for your house’s plumbing slowly to the off position. This cuts off the flow of new water to the entire plumbing system.

    • 2

Turn on both the hot and cold water full blast on a faucet that sits at a level below the location where you wish to install the sink. If the installation location sits at the lowest level of the house, turn on a faucet that sits closer to the plumbing’s main water valve.

    • 3

Turn on both the hot and cold water for the sink you will be replacing. This will ensure that the water has completely drained from the water supply pipes as well as the flexible water supply lines that connect to the underside of the sink’s faucet.

Turn the house’s main water valve to the open position slowly once you have finished installing the new sink’s faucet. Opening the main water valve too quickly may break free debris clinging to the walls of the water supply pipes, clogging the faucets with the debris.
