How to Repair a Squeaking Shower Base

If moving around in your shower results in strange squeaking noises from your shower base, chances are your shower pan needs some repair work. The shower pan, or base section of your shower, which is usually comprised of fiberglass, may be loose. You can fill any gaps between your bathroom floor and your shower pan by applying mortar to the area. Sealing the gap should fix your squeak and result in a sturdier, level shower base.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a utility knife to slice off the caulking around your pan where it meets the floor and the walls. Slice off the caulking both within and outside of the shower pan.

    • 2

Use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the drain on your shower, then lift up the drain and set it in a safe location.

    • 3

Cut the rubber flange located inside your drain with your utility knife. Use a drill bit to drill through any areas of the flange that are too hardened to cut off with your knife. Make sure to remove all of the flange pieces from the pipe. Attach a hose to a shop vac and vacuum any residual flange rubber pieces from the pipe.

Insert the end of a crowbar beneath the shower pan and lift up to pry it free. Remove the pan and set it aside.

    • 5

Prepare mortar in a bucket according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a trowel to scoop out the mortar and apply a layer of it on the floor of your bathroom where the shower pan will go. Cover the entire exposed area of bathroom flooring. Leave approximately 4 inches of space around the shower drain pipe to allow free movement of the pipe. Use the back of your trowel to smooth over the mortar. Let the mortar set for 24 hours.

Place the shower pan over the dry mortar. Insert a new rubber flange around the pipe. Place the drain back into the shower pan and screw it back in with your screwdriver.

Cut off the end of a tube of caulk with your utility knife. Insert the tube into a caulking gun. Depress the gun trigger to release a bead of caulk. Caulk the edge of the shower pan where it makes contact with the floor and walls of your bathroom. Allow the caulk to dry, based on the caulk manufacturer’s recommendations.
