How to Paint a Fiberglass Shower Basin

Many homes come equipped with preformed fiberglass basins in the shower units. This is convenient for installation and the material is also water resistant. However, like any other part of your home you may become bored with the color of your fiberglass tub and decide to paint it. Since this isn't wood or dry wall, you'll need to approach the task differently than a standard paint job.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the water off in your shower and allow the basin to thoroughly dry.

    • 2

Sand the basin of your shower lightly with 320-grit sandpaper. Be careful not to sand through the fiberglass, but rather until the surface finish slightly dulls. This prepares the basin for the primer.

    • 3

Open a window or door in your bathroom for ventilation. Put on gloves and a respirator.

    • 4

Dab a cloth with muriatic acid cleaning solution and wipe the basin down thoroughly. Immediately wash the basin with water afterwards because muriatic acid is one of the harshest and most potent cleansers on the market.

    • 5

Allow the basin to dry and tape off the area where the basin meets the wall with masking tape.

    • 6

Apply a coat of primer with a paintbrush or roller. Allow the primer to dry.

    • 7

Clean the brush or roller and apply a coat of epoxy-based paint to the shower basin. You can also use spray paint. Repeat this step until you are satisfied with the depth of color in the paint job.
