How to Install a Bathtub Knob

Maybe you're remodeling your bathroom or maybe you're just tired of your old, outdated bathtub knobs. Whatever the reason, you don't have to call a plumber or handyman to replace the hot and cold water knobs on your tub. Unless your knobs are leaking or you have a plumbing problem, you shouldn't have to delve very deep into your tub's plumbing system to install a knob, making this the ideal project for those who want to give their bathtub a fresh look without paying a professional to install the upgrade.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water supply to the tub. Turn on both the hot and cold fixtures to drain away excess water within the pipes.

    • 2

Examine the area around the fixture for old caulking. Slice through old caulk around the existing knob with a utility knife.

    • 3

Slip the edge of your utility knife under the knob cap to pop it off. Unscrew and remove the screw in the center of the knob. Lift the existing knob away from the valve stem.

    • 4

Clean away mold and mildew on the porcelain surrounding the valve stem with a damp washcloth. Scrape away any dried caulk with a putty knife.

    • 5

Read the instructions that came with your new bathroom fixture. Attach the new knob. All bathroom knobs are different, but you will likely need to twist the knob itself onto the valve stem and secure it with a knob screw and cap.

    • 6

Turn the water back on and test the knob to ensure that the fixture works properly.

    • 7

Recaulk the area around the knob with household silicone caulking.
