How to Make Out the Hole for the Toilet on the Backer Board

Cement-based backer board provides a sturdy base when installing ceramic tile in moisture-prone areas while eliminating the need to build a mortar bed. This quickens the process of subfloor installation but proposes some unique problems when the material requires a hole for a toilet flange or other large round openings. Luckily, cement backer board cuts a lot like its close cousin, drywall. Similar tools are needed to cut large holes in both materials, although, backer board tools require blades that can withstand the hard nature of cement.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Fine-point permanent marker
  • Dividers
  • Carbide-tipped cutting tool
  • Claw hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Pull a tape measure across the face of the toilet flange. Note the flange diameter. Measure the distance from the wall to the side of the flange. Add one-half the flange diameter to the measurement to determine the center of the flange. Repeat the process from the wall to the back edge of the flange.

    • 2

Mark the centers of the toilet flange on a piece of backer board, using the tape measure and a fine-tipped permanent marker. Mark the orientation of the backer board to the toilet. For example, write “Front” on the side of the backer board that protrudes past the front edge of the toilet flange. Mark the centers on the other side of the backer board.

    • 3

Set a pair of dividers at one-half the toilet flange diameter with the added 1/2 inch.

    • 4

Align one leg of the dividers with the intersection of the marks representing the center of the toilet flange. Spin the dividers to mark the hole. Flip over the backer board and repeat the process.

    • 5

Drag a carbide-tipped cutting tool along the line created by the dividers until a 1/32-inch-deep score line covers the mark. Flip over the backer board. Score the second side of the board as described.

    • 6

Stand the board upright. Hit the area inside the scored line with a hammer until the board breaks along the score line.

    • 7

Slide the half-round side of a wood rasp along the score line to even out all rough edges.
