How to Install a Vanity Counter

A vanity counter is necessary to house a bathroom sink, as well as to potentially store a variety of personal hygiene items, such as toothbrushes, cups, etc. Consumers have many options when it comes to vanity counter surfaces, from granite to solid surface to laminate. Choose the right material based on your bathroom’s design aesthetic and your budget. Make sure you have picked out your sink and faucet design beforehand, as this will affect cuts in the counter.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water supply to your vanity.

    • 2

Measure the length depth of your vanity to determine the correct dimensions for your countertop. Allow 3/4 inch of overhang for the length and ½ inch of overhang for the depth. Order the appropriate amount of material.

    • 3

Mark the placement of the sink on the counter with masking tape. The sink should be centered over the base cabinet.

    • 4

Turn your sink upside down on top of the counter surface. Trace the outline of your sink onto the counter, then measure and mark and outline ½ inch in from there.

    • 5

Support the counter surface on the vanity, with the bottom of the counter facing upward. Drill pilot holes along the outline, then cut out the sink outline with the jig saw.

    • 6

Flip the counter right side up. Line the inside rim of the sink with the caulk adhesive, and place the sink in the cutout. Let the adhesive dry.

    • 7

Screw the counter into the cabinet base from underneath the counter through the corner braces and sides. The length of the screws will depend upon the thickness of your counter and the base cabinet; the screws should not penetrate the counter surface.
